What to put on a plastic window sill

Window sills in the interior are a small detail, but sometimes they require restoration. Self-adhesive film for window sills is an affordable and inexpensive option for updating it.

The variety of film in the decorative sense is enormous. This is an imitation of stone, textures of precious wood, mosaics, leather, tiles, and other options. You can choose matte, glossy material.

A more suitable material for these purposes can be considered a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) film, which has many positive characteristics.

This is a wide range of colors and styling for various materials, moisture resistance, mechanical strength, it is perfectly glued to any surface. In addition, the self-adhesive is durable, affordable, easy to stick and maintain, and easy to replace.

The material is suitable for restoration, renovation of doors, furniture, household items (refrigerator, for example). It is glued to metal, drywall, plywood, glass, plastic, tiles, and other surfaces.

Preparatory work

First of all, choose a self-adhesive film based on the overall harmony with the decoration of the room. Usually window sills are covered with tulle, but color and pattern are still visible through it. In the kitchen, the window sill can generally be opened if a lambrequin is hanging.

Now, paired with plastic windows, plastic window sills are installed, which are easily decorated. And if he is of the old generation? For example, cement-bonded particle board (DSP), reinforced concrete version.

They, as a rule, were simply painted, some were covered with ceramic tiles. If the oil paint holds well, then you can glue on it. If peeling is present, remove easily removable particles.

In the presence of cracks, chips, dents from impacts, everything must be puttied and sanded with sandpaper. Put the window sill in order before restoration – it should be even to perfection.

Self-adhesive film for window sills will fit well on any well-prepared base. There should not even be small protruding particles, since all of them will be noticeable on a new product.

Coat the wooden work surface with acrylic varnish, and window sills made of the above materials can also be primed with an appropriate primer.

The easiest way is to laminate plastic window sills if you decide to change the color scheme. They usually do not need extensive training. They should simply be degreased (with detergent), wait until completely dry.

Self-adhesive window sill wrapping

When the preparation is completed, proceed to the process itself.

Get ready for work:

  • Selected sticker;
  • Knife, scissors;
  • Long ruler, tape measure, pencil;
  • Rags, sponge, rubber spatula.

The crucial moment is to cut the film correctly. Ideally, this should be one blank with correctly cut corners, smooth edges. If in doubt about the calculations, then make a preliminary pattern on paper and try it on the windowsill.

When cutting, consider the height of the ends and a slight bend under the window sill. If everything is perfectly marked, you can transfer the drawing to a self-adhesive film. Lay it face down, on the wrong side there is a lined grid with a step of 10mm for easy cutting.

Transfer your pattern to the self-adhesive, lightly drawing on it the contours of the pattern. If you have a film with an imitation or a pattern, then try to orient it so that the pattern is equally symmetrical on opposite slopes.

If there are several windows in the room, it will be correct to cut out canvases of the same symmetry. The self-adhesive film for window sills is cut, the preparation is done, you can proceed to the main process.

If you are faced with this task for the first time, then before laminating the window sills, slightly moisten the base with water or a little soapy water. I’ll explain why. Then the film will not stick “tightly” to the surface, and it can be corrected, slightly shifted, eliminating the skew.

Separate a piece of protective paper from the self-adhesive film by 5-10 centimeters to fix its initial location on the base. Attach to the window sill at its base and start smoothing from the center to the edges, pressing the film well

Peel off the backing from the film in small sections and stick these sections on the surface. And so the whole workpiece, the ends and fold under the window sill base. If an offset is detected, correct it, since you glued the film to a damp surface.

Smooth with rags, rubber spatula. Inspect the finished product for bubbles. They are easy to eliminate by piercing with a needle, and, pressing, release the air. Usually the difficulty arises when you laminate the corners, but since you have everything cut out in advance, cuts are made at the bend points, then there should be no problems.

Removing the film

When replacing the film, the question arises of how to quickly remove the self-adhesive film. The easiest method is to wet it several times with hot water, then the adhesive component will soften and easily move away from the base. With a spatula, start removing the film.

An ordinary hair dryer can come to the rescue, which already heats the surface in a dry way and helps to remove the self-adhesive. Warm up the section, and, prying the film, pull it towards you, then the next section. Remove adhesive residue with alcohol, solvent.

Just like that, a self-adhesive window sill film can transform its design. The main thing is accuracy in work, accuracy in measurements and adherence to sticker technology, then the quality will be at its best.

The window sill is often perceived not only as an element of the overall design of the window, but as an independent multifunctional piece of furniture. It can be used as a table, shelf, step or seat. Enhanced operation of the window plate, especially for other purposes, leads to a loss of aesthetic appearance and mechanical damage.

Over time, the desire to update the look of the window sill may be associated not only with the need for restoration, but also with decoration elements. You can not only strengthen the window sill slab and renew the surface with wear defects, but choose a more suitable color, texture, shape. A new technology for replacing an old window sill consists in the selection and installation of a special lining.

Restoration with the help of an overlay allows you to restore the freshness and attractiveness of the window at minimal cost, adjust the shape, taking into account functional features.

Installation will not take much time, will not affect the walls, wallpaper, the main structure of the window, and will allow you to do without inviting installers to do everything yourself. It should be noted that it is possible to carry out such a restoration provided that the thickness of the window sill is not more than 6 cm.

Description and functions

The overlays are made of thin profiled sheets, which are used for finishing work and cosmetic repairs.

It is impossible to make an independent window sill out of them, but they are universal as a finishing coating for restoration purposes. Suitable for wooden window sills, made of plastic or concrete, as they are combined with all building materials.

Like many window designs, the overlays are made of PVC, so they form a single whole. A wide range of colors, patterns, shades, dimensions allows the user to choose the best option. The maximum length can reach 3 meters, and the depth is 1.5 m.

The end caps are made from the same material. The use of a metal-plastic base preserves the strength of products and makes them quite cheap and affordable.

Due to the thin, but hard and durable material, the window sill after restoration becomes resistant to fire, ultraviolet radiation, humidity, and temperature extremes.

Advantages and disadvantages

The advantages of plastic overlays, in comparison with the replacement of a whole window slab, are as follows:

  1. Low cost.
  2. Quick and easy installation.
  3. The choice of colors in accordance with the interior.
  4. Possibility to make changes in the shape and size of the window sill.
  5. Long period of use and interchangeability if necessary.

The disadvantages include the same properties that are inherent in plastic window sills: the fragility of the coating and instability to mechanical damage.

In what cases are necessary?

There can be many reasons for installing:

  1. Concrete or granite window slabs sometimes crack or chip at the corners.
  2. Plastic window sills, especially white ones, burn out and turn yellow over time.
  3. Frequent, there are injuries from hot objects that accidentally fall on the surface, including from unextinguished cigarettes.
  4. Traces from flower pots and water dried on the surface.
  5. Stains from aggressive cleaners.
  6. Accidental mechanical damage.
  7. Scratches and traces of claws, teeth of pets.
  8. The desire to simply update the surface by changing the shape or color shade.

Decorative overlays are available in two types: made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or MDF panels (from the German name Mittel Dichte Fazerplatte – fiberboard).

Plastic

Available in different color shades: white, imitation marble or wood pattern.

Designed for installation on window slabs made of various building materials:

  • wooden;
  • concrete;
  • tiled;
  • stone, natural or artificial;

The overlay is selected in width 2 cm more than the window sill in order to prevent the appearance of a gap with a gap on the old base. In a set with an overlay, you need to pick up end caps from the same material, suitable in width and shape for finishing the sidewalls.

MDF lining with drip

It is possible to restore the same window sills as from PVC. The difference between MDF overlays is the limited range of colors and the absence of corresponding end caps. In construction markets, they are less common than plastic ones.

The overlay from the MDF panel should be wider than the board to be closed by at least 6–8 cm of the drip, and the drip itself will serve not only for its main purpose, but also for closing the old window sill.

The usual dimensions of MDF overlays are: width – 35-70 cm, thickness – 15-18 mm, length – up to 4 m.

Before buying a lining, you need to carefully approach the choice.

It is recommended to consider the following criteria:

  1. The shade of color should match the entire window system or be in harmony with wallpaper, curtains, interior details.
  2. Qualitative characteristics should reflect resistance to moisture, temperature changes and sunlight.
  3. Can be used with common detergents.
  4. Size , as close as possible to the dimensions of the window sill, taking into account the necessary “margin”.
  5. The presence of plugs suitable for the size and shape of the plate.

Installation

Even a novice can install the lining without the help of specialists. The installation process will not take much time, since the dismantling of the old structure is not required.

Before starting work, you need to check the availability of all the necessary materials and tools:

  • overlay of the right size and plugs;
  • glue;
  • silicone;
  • a saw with fine teeth or a jigsaw;
  • construction roulette;

The work process includes several successive stages:

  1. Step 1. Preparatory. The surface of the window slab must be even, therefore, if there are chips and cracks on the concrete base, they must first be sealed with gypsum putty. Plastic or wood surfaces do not require special preparation, but must be clean. If necessary, you can treat with an antiseptic.
  2. Step 2. Open. You can cut the overlay with a mounting knife or a jigsaw. The parameters of the window recess must be carefully measured; to maintain accuracy, you can make a paper template while maintaining all the contours of the opening.
  3. Step 3. Installation. On the wrong side, you need to apply assembly glue and distribute it first along the perimeter, and then in zigzags over the free space. After placing the pad, you need to press it and put the load on the corners for a strong fix. During the drying period of the glue, further work can not be carried out.
  4. Step 4. Stubs. The plug must be cut to size, glued to the sides of the window slab.
  5. Step 5. Sealing. Joints along the slopes and window frames are treated with sealant. A layer of silicone is evenly applied to the seams to hide the docking line. You can use rubberized profiles or special corners.

The calculation of the price, taking into account the individual dimensions of the window sill, can be done in the installation company or independently. In any case, the result will please you in comparison with the cost of replacing the structure.

The price consists of several main parameters:

  1. Material quality.
  2. Manufacturer brand.
  3. Product size.
  4. Color.

Approximate prices per linear meter of material are:

  1. For plastic overlays – $ 7.
  2. For an MDF overlay – $ 30.

The price varies depending on the width and color of the material. End caps cost $4 on average.

Self-updating the interior is a useful and exciting activity. Following the recommendations, you can carry out restoration if necessary. And if you just want to bring a new element into the familiar environment of your home and show creativity – try changing the surface of the window sill. You will succeed!

Few people know that plastic window sills – faithful companions of new plastic windows – are made from thermoplastic material. In other words, they do not tolerate high temperatures well. Of course, it is unlikely that you will put out cigarettes on a plastic window sill. But this is not required; to spoil the window sill, just a vase of flowers or an ordinary three-liter jar of water is enough.

I’ll make a reservation right away: we are talking about windows on the southern facade of the building. The danger is the concentration of sunlight with a lens into a small spot.

Older people remember how in childhood, with the help of a positive convex lens from grandmother’s glasses, whole drawings were burned on plywood in the sun. Involuntarily, such a lens can form during the installation of windows, and during their operation.

How does it happen and what to do?

One of the stages of turnkey window installation is the installation of a plastic window sill on mounting foam. After cutting and fitting the window sill in place, it is “put on the foam” and usually pressed down with something from above. It is impossible not to press down – the mounting foam expands after leaving the cylinder and can change the geometry of the window sill.

Often, installers have to use improvised materials that are on the construction site to fix the window sill.

But there are times when a three-liter glass jar of water becomes a load. And here is a ready-made collective lens: during the day in sunny weather, the radiation focused by it into a small spot on the surface of the window sill can actually melt and even char the plastic surface. Of course, this does not always happen and depends on many factors: the weather, the location of the sun, the characteristics of the double-glazed window, the geometry of the window opening. But such a situation with damage to plastic window sills occurs periodically and it is better to avoid it.
Tip: Use anything but a glass jar of water as an oppression for mounting a plastic window sill.Damage is possible not only on plastic window sills. The paint layer of the window sill made of wood may also suffer, the acrylic composite will melt. The lens is not terrible, perhaps, only for window sills made of natural stone
. And now, the main thing is that it is possible to damage the surface of the window sill not only during the installation process. Surface burns from concentrated solar energy are possible during normal operation. You just need to leave on the windowsill any glass transparent container with a curved surface filled with water.

Now the same bank stands on a regular newspaper, a bright spot on it is also clearly visible.
